PostgreSQL 53300 vs Prisma ORM P2024
The difference
53300 is the Postgres server refusing a new session because max_connections is full. P2024 is Prisma's own client-side pool timing out while waiting for a free connection.
| 53300 PostgreSQL · Too many connections | P2024 Prisma ORM · Connection pool timeout | |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Server max_connections exhausted | Prisma pool had no free connection within pool_timeout |
| Who is wrong | Total connections across all clients | This process: pool size vs concurrency |
| Retry? | Yes, with backoff — slots free up | Yes, but fix pool sizing or slow queries |
| Typical trigger | Serverless fan-out, leaked connections | Promise.all bursts, many PrismaClient instances, slow queries |
| Fix | Add a pooler (PgBouncer/Supavisor/Neon), cap pools | Singleton client, tune connection_limit & pool_timeout |
| Header to check | SELECT count(*) FROM pg_stat_activity | Error meta: connection_limit, timeout |
Which one do I have?
- If the message starts with FATAL: sorry, too many clients → it is 53300.
- If it says "Timed out fetching a new connection from the connection pool" → it is P2024.
- If both appear together → too many Prisma pools are filling the server; add a pooler and a singleton client.
